Amber stood on the beach, looking out at the ocean. It was huge, and vast. The waves seemed to be running from something, or maybe they were actually running away from something. They seemed to be getting closer and closer to the shore, but they never made it all the way up. She knew that water was power enough to slowly move the earth, but she wondered if it would ever make it all the way up the shore.
She wished her dog, Samson, were here. If he were, he would be running, jumping, and playing in the waves. Then he would ran back onto the sand, shake, and roll in the sand. After that, he would run back into the water, the whole thing would start all over again, and it would never get old. There was nothing Amber liked more than seeing her dog having fun, but now she would never see that again, and Samson would never be able to have fun again. A tear slid down her cheek, and she did not bother to whip it away.
Amber wished that she could be like the ocean, but she knew that she was not. She stayed in one place, and it wasn’t even a good place. She never tried to run, and she wondered why, but she knew why. Her mother had given her crap, all her life, but she still loved her. Her father did not pay attention to her, but she still loved him. She loved her brother, more than anyone else in the world, even though he was sometimes really mean to her. They basically killed her dog!

"STOP," Merrick was laughing as she was being chased along the shore by one of Pleasant High's football players, obviously not wanting him to stop. Why would she when she was getting all the attention she could ever want? He knew it just as much as she did, finally catching and scooping her into her arms, a soft giggle as the petite female tried to squirm away.
That's when the group first saw the girl by the shores, alone and seemingly lost in thought (not that Merrick would know, the girl hardly had thoughts worth getting lost in). The group had no idea who she even was, and yet that didn't stop them from starting to tease her from afar. Merrick, not enjoying the fact that the attention was no longer on her, made it a point to appear the better person in the group - telling them all how immature they were as she jogged towards the figure in the distance.
The closer she got the sight didn't get better, the girl looking rather depressed, Merrick unsure if she should even continue to approach or just go back to her group of friends. Obviously whoever this was the last thing she looked to want was company. "Hey," Merrick called out as she came closer, offering the new face at least a smile as she glanced back in the direction of her group of friends - all staring as they couldn't quite understand the exchange.
"You looked like you could use some company," or a better wardrobe but of course Merrick was going to keep that small tidbit to herself, "what are you doing out here all alone?" She asked, half expecting someone to emerge from the waves or something - at least then the entire scene wouldn't have such a miserable feel to it. "I'm Merrick, by the way," she offered a hand out to shake.

Amber heard a voice. At first, she did not think that the voice was directed at her, but then she saw an older girl approaching her, from the corner of her eye. She turned, to the speaker, who she saw was smiling. At first, she just stared at her blankly. She wished she could return that smile, but she knew that she couldn’t. She was too sad.
Amber had walked to the beach, by herself. It was a long walk, but she and Samson both really liked the beach. She and Samson had only been allowed out of the house themselves, to go for a walk once a day. Now, it was the only time she was allowed out of the house by herself, and her brother did not like letting her go out by herself, so she was probably going to lose that privilege any day now. Amber had had so little in her life, and everything she did have was being taken away.
The girl asked her what she was doing there alone. “Just, wa-watching the water,” she said, sadly, with her head hung low. A few more tears came down. She held one head out and shook the girls hand, which was a jester that she had always liked, mainly because of the no weapons meaning behind it. She wondered if she should introduce herself, or wait to be asked her name. She figured Merrick must be really nice, if she was bothering to speak to her when she was really down, but Amber felt bad that she was bothering with her.
